Disneyland is one of the most magical places on earth โ but it can also be overwhelming, expensive, and exhausting if you don't know what you're doing. After planning hundreds of Disneyland trips through our AI concierge, here are the tips that make the biggest difference.
Before you go
1. Buy your tickets in advance โ and buy them through us
Disneyland no longer sells tickets at the gate for the same-day rate. More importantly, our discount tickets save families real money vs. buying directly from Disney. A family of 4 can save $80โ120 on tickets alone by booking through stayandplai.
2. Download the Disneyland app before you arrive
The Disneyland app shows real-time wait times, lets you mobile order food, and handles Lightning Lane purchases. Set it up at home so you're not fumbling with it at the gate.
3. Book your hotel close to the park
Staying within walking distance of Disneyland saves enormous time. The Westin Anaheim Resort is steps from the entrance. On-site Disney hotels get early park access โ worth it if your kids are serious Disney fans.
At the park
4. Arrive 30 minutes before official opening
The first 90 minutes of the day are the least crowded. Rope drop (when the park officially opens) lets you walk onto rides that will have 60-minute waits by 11am. This is the single most impactful thing you can do.
5. Hit the big rides first
In Disneyland: Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, and Matterhorn get lines fast. In DCA: Radiator Springs Racers and Guardians of the Galaxy fill up within minutes of opening. Do these first.
6. Use Lightning Lane strategically
Lightning Lane Individual (the paid skip-the-line option) is worth it for Radiator Springs Racers at DCA โ it's almost always the longest wait in both parks. Lightning Lane Multi Pass is better value for families hitting multiple rides.
7. Take a midday break
Toddler meltdown at 2pm is almost guaranteed if you don't plan a break. Go back to your hotel for 1โ2 hours during the midday rush. When you return around 4pm, lines are shorter and the evening shows are worth staying for.
8. Mobile order lunch
Waiting in line for food is a waste of precious park time. Open the Disneyland app, place your order, and pick up your food when you arrive. Blue Bayou (inside Pirates of the Caribbean) requires advance reservations โ book it before your trip if you want the full experience.
Tips for families with very young kids
- Rider Switch โ For height-restricted rides, one parent can wait with the young child while the other rides. Then you swap without waiting in line again.
- Character meets โ Check the app for character meet times. These change daily. Lines for popular characters (Mickey, Elsa) can be 45+ minutes.
- Fantasy Faire โ The royal theater area in Fantasyland is perfect for princess-obsessed kids under 6. Often less crowded than the rest of the park.
- Baby Care Centers โ Both parks have excellent baby care centers with nursing rooms, high chairs, changing areas, and basic supplies.
Money-saving tips
- Buy discount tickets through stayandplai โ save vs. gate prices.
- Bring your own snacks and drinks in a small backpack โ Disneyland allows outside food.
- Eat breakfast at your hotel before the park. Disneyland food is fine but pricey.
- Skip the character dining unless it's important to your kids โ the time and money are better spent on rides and snacks.
- Consider a 2-day ticket instead of 1-day if visiting both parks โ the per-day cost is significantly lower.
