Tampa is the most underrated family destination in Florida. While everyone flocks to Orlando and Miami, Tampa quietly offers some of the best theme parks, wildlife experiences, and beaches in the entire state — often at a fraction of the price and with half the crowds.
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Busch Gardens is the centerpiece of any Tampa family trip, and for good reason. It combines a genuine zoological park with world-class roller coasters in a way that no other park in the country does. Kids can see cheetahs, rhinos, and hippos in the morning, then ride Cheetah Hunt (a family-friendly coaster) in the afternoon.
Best for: Families with kids ages 4–16. The animal experiences appeal to young kids while the coasters (including Cobra's Curse, Iron Gwazi, and SheiKra) keep older kids and adults fully entertained.
Don't miss: The Serengeti Plain (a 65-acre preserve viewed by train, truck, or skyride), Cheetah Hunt, and the live entertainment at the Moroccan Palace Theater.
ZooTampa at Lowry Park
Consistently rated one of the best zoos in the United States, ZooTampa is an absolute must for families with young children. The zoo is compact enough to do in a single day without exhaustion, and the animal encounters are remarkably up-close — including a manatee rehabilitation center that's unlike anything else in Florida.
Best for: Families with kids ages 2–10. This is one of the best zoos in the Southeast for young children.
Don't miss: The manatee rehabilitation center, the Florida wildlife exhibits, the water play area (Imagination Springs), and the Lowry Park Safari.
The Florida Aquarium
Located in downtown Tampa's Channelside district, the Florida Aquarium is beautifully designed and genuinely educational. The outdoor water play area (Splash Pad) is perfect for young kids on hot days, and the dive shows featuring sharks and rays are surprisingly thrilling.
Best for: Families with kids of any age. The aquarium is small enough to do in 2–3 hours, making it a great half-day option to combine with lunch in the Channelside area.
Adventure Island Tampa
Right next door to Busch Gardens, Adventure Island is Busch Gardens' water park — and it's excellent. The slides range from mild (the lazy river and family splash areas) to genuinely thrilling (Gulf Scream, a 210-foot free-fall drop). It's also significantly cheaper than the major water parks in Orlando.
Best for: Families with kids ages 4+. Best visited April–September when Tampa's heat makes a water park genuinely necessary.
Tampa Bay CityPASS
If you're planning to hit multiple Tampa attractions, the Tampa Bay CityPASS bundles the top 5 attractions (Busch Gardens, Florida Aquarium, Adventure Island, ZooTampa, and Glazer Children's Museum) at a significant discount vs. buying separately. We offer it at discounted rates through stayandplai.
Where to stay in Tampa
For families focused on Busch Gardens, the Hyatt Place Tampa/Busch Gardens is the most convenient option — walkable to the park entrance. For families who want to explore all of Tampa, downtown hotels in the Water Street or Channel District put you near the Aquarium and Tampa's excellent restaurant scene.
